Chance The Rapper Sued For Copyright Infringement For Song From His 2012 Mixtape “10 Day”

Chance The Rapper is being sued for copyright infringement for the song “Windows” that comes from his 2012 debut mixtape “Windows.

According to Billboard The plaintiff, a New-York based jazz musician and composer named Abdul Wali Muhammad (formerly Eric P. Saunders) claims the song contains portions of the Lonnie Liston Smith song “Bridge Through Time,” which Muhammad filed a separate copyright claim for in 1979, a year before it was released.

Muhammad says that he never granted Chance The Rapper permission to use the sample and now he is seeking damages for infringement. Muhammad is also requesting a court order from a federal judge to stop Chance from copying, distributing, performing, selling or offering to sell Chance’s song ‘Windows.’

“Windows” actually uses a sample of Apollo Brown’s “A Bridge Through Time,” which samples Smith’s “A Bridge Through Time.” Brown is credited as a producer on the 10 Day track.  We’ll just have to see what happens.
