The late icon, who was murdered in 1996, recently earned a somewhat understated nomination in the “Best Music Film” category for “Dear Mama,” a five-part FX docuseries directed by Allen Hughes and currently available for streaming on Hulu.

Named after Shakur’s single from the album “Me Against the World,” the docuseries delves into the rapper’s life, music, and his relationship with his mother, Afeni Shakur, a notable Black Panther Party activist.

Competing for the Grammy in the same category are films centered on Kendrick Lamar (“Live From Paris, the Big Steppers Tour”), Lewis Capaldi (“How I’m Feeling Now”), and two other posthumous nominees, David Bowie (“Moonage Daydream”) and Little Richard (“I Am Everything”).
While Bowie secured a Grammy during his lifetime, Little Richard famously did not, expressing his disappointment at the 1988 Grammy Awards.

Despite winning a lifetime achievement Grammy in 1993, this could potentially be Little Richard’s first Grammy in a competitive category.
This marks Tupac Shakur’s seventh Grammy nomination and his second posthumous nod. His previous nominations include the 1995 Grammys, where he was recognized for “Me Against the World” in the Best Rap Album category and “Dear Mama” in the Best Rap Solo Performance category. The following year, although considered for “All Eyez on Me” and “California Love” in respective categories, he was not awarded.

Shakur received his first posthumous nomination in 1999 for Best Rap Solo Performance with “Changes,” featured on the “Greatest Hits” collection. The 66th Grammy Awards are scheduled for February 4th at the Crypto.com Arena in downtown Los Angeles.
