ESPN NBA analyst Stephen A. Smith has never been one to mince words. And during a recent appearance on Fat Joe & Jadakiss’s Joe and Jada podcast, he had a lot to say about former NFL star Antonio Brown.
Since playing his final down in the NFL, Brown has found himself in the headlines several times. Never for a good reason.
Stephen A. Smith Believes Antonio Brown Has CTE
In his most recent incident, Brown was extradited to the United States by Dubai officials. After being charged with attempted murder, Smith believes that the cause of the former NFL star’s downfall is related to his struggles with the brain disease, CTE.
“Personally, I think that’s what Antonio Brown is going through,” Smith said after referencing CTE. “That’s why he got arrested in Dubai. He hasn’t been the same since that hit with Vontaze Burfict when he was a Pittsburgh Steeler. His whole body seized up like Rigamortis.”
Smith backed his claim with evidence as well. He noted how, after Brown’s relationship with the Pittsburgh Steelers soured, he was traded to the Oakland Raiders in 2019. Along with a brand new $50 million contract. But once again, multiple off-the-field issues that summer ended his relationship with the Raiders. He never played a single down for the franchise. He also didn’t get a chance to collect his $29 million in guaranteed money.
“Remember when he was on the Raiders? I said, ‘Ladies and gentlemen, it’s Thursday. They got a Monday Night Football game. So all he has to do is play and shut the f*ck up, and by Tuesday afternoon, he’s guaranteed 29 million,” Smith continued. “He opened his mouth anyway, and they cut him before Tuesday.”
Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, or CTE, is a brain disease caused by repeated head injuries and concussions. The disease, often seen in athletes and armed service veterans, leads to problems with memory and thinking, mood and personality changes like aggression and depression, and movement issues like tremors and difficulty with balance.
So far, Brown has yet to respond to Stephen A’s recent comments.
